IT Professionals' Day 2016 in Latvia

On 19 February was celebrated IT Professionals' Day 2016 (Latvijas programmētāju Diena 2016) in Riga, Latvia. The main events of the Latvian IT Professionals' Day were the scientific conference, technology workshops for students prepared by the universities and IT companies of Latvia, and the IT Professionals' Day ball. The Day was organised by LIKTA in cooperation with University of Latvia, Riga Technical University and Rezekne Technology Academy within eSkills for Jobs campaign. IT companies Accenture, Exigen Services Latvia, SQUALIO Cloud Consulting, Tieto Latvia, ZZ Dats participated in the event as partners.

A total of 713 people participated in the events of the Latvian IT Professionals’ Day, including the viewers of conference live stream. Leaders and experts of the leading IT industry companies, and representatives of universities delivered speeches during the conference.

 IT Professionals’ Day was opened by LIKTA President Dr. Signe Balina and Dean of the Faculty of Computing of University of Latvia Prof. Juris Brozovs.

At the end of the conference the best students were awarded prizes and medals: Ilze Osina (Ilze Ošiņa), 1st year student in Master's programme in faculty of Physics and mathematics of University of Latvia, received Lady Ada Lovelace award for active and fruitful work in promoting mathematics.

 Charles Babbage award was given to two computing faculty students of University of Latvia: Arturs Znotins (Atūrs Znotiņš), 2nd year student in computer science Master's programme, and Emils Sjundjukovs (Emīls Sjundjukovs), 1st year student in computer science Master's programme, for active and fruitful work and promotion of computer sciences.

During the conference university representatives and industry researchers presented the latest trends and studies in computer sciences, changes in labour market of IT industry and introduced the challenges in development of young professionals.

Parallel to the scientific conference students of various universities had an opportunity to participate in practical programming workshops, organized by experts from leading IT companies and university representatives:

  • AngularJS;
  • Network applications security;
  • Coding Dojo, using Test Driven Development;
  • Mini-sumo robot programming;
  • Automated testing by use of BDD (Behaviour Driven Development) method;
  • How to create a 3D printer in 4 hours;
  • Development of Unity3D platformer computer game.
